If a child abandons education to work, what would you think of it? Is it the right thing to do? Obviously not! Why? Because education is a basic right that should be provided regardless of financial circumstances.
On the other hand, if a child leaves education to pursue a singing career or an acting career, how would you react? Normally people do not even question the child, parent or any authority. Why? Because it is portrayed that it is what the child wants. The real reason everyone remains silent is due to the double standards of the society and the glamorization of child artists.
Is a child artist a laborer?
In most scenarios, children are exposed to the limelight of the showbiz industry prematurely for financial gain. Doing this at such a vulnerable and tender age is without any doubt, cruel. Many people view showbiz as a place for personal growth and development as it is believed that a positive environment is provided to the children to express themselves.
But isn't a child working 18 hours on the set a laborer as well? Many child artists do not abandon their studies and continue to work alongside. Practically speaking, is this humane to expect a minor to give their best when constantly working or studying and becoming exhausted?
In many scenarios, the consent of the child is overlooked because they're considered minors and they are bound to do what their guardians decide. While child exploitation is very common in the entertainment industry, working at an early age may pose physical and mental health risks.
Does the media promote child artists?
Without a doubt, the answer to this question is yes! Being in showbiz is glamorized by the media and in some cases because children help them to gain millions of dollars. They're labeled as 'artists' to project a positive image. Our media is biased and always supports what's convenient for them, what brings them money and what benefits them the most.
Is working as a child labor always bad?
While the ideology of working as a child labour is always shunned in this double standard society, it is important to consider both sides of the story. A majority of children work to alleviate the financial burdens of their families. A vast chunk of child labour belongs to the low income class, and the children are left with no other option than to work and survive. Under these circumstances, the line between exploitation and practically is blurred to ensure survival. At times, children are engaged in activities that are age appropriate and have a positive impact not only on the family income, but also the personal development of the child.
The only important aspect of this discussion is that whatever children do, their consent should be ensured and they should be protected and provided for by the authorities.
